Three months ago, the recent graduates of my alma mater, University of the Philippines, were recognized and sent off into the real world. I remember 7 years ago when I graduated from the College of Human Kinetics, and had so much dreams and aspirations. Some of them were achieved, some still have yet to find their day, but one thing’s for sure: I’m not stopping. Because everyday is another day to get better, and if you do it everyday, then you’ll be better forever.

Being in the health and fitness industry is, truthfully, one of the best things that could have ever happened to me. Not a lot of people know that I didn’t want to be in this industry initially. I actually wanted to be a film-maker (I still do). However, as fate would have it, I ended up in sports science. Now, I know that it’s the best thing that has happened for my career.

Graduates, you now have an automatic advantage in your respective industries. You have been trained, molded and educated by our fine institution, so maximize it. BUT, and this is a big but, don’t you dare rest on this fact. The worst thing that you can do after college is to stop learning. If you want to be the best, then you have to be better forever.

In any industry, it pays to be first. In the health, sports, and fitness industry, which is a field that is ever evolving and where knowledge today can be passé tomorrow. If you want to be the best, then you have to be prepared and updated. That means staying on top of everything that is going on in our field.

In today’s day and age of advanced technology, I can easily do that just by looking at my Samsung Galaxy S5, which is definitely the best phone for the job because of the big screen, and countless features that fits my lifestyle / line of work. And with Globe’s new Galaxy Forever plan, I can make sure that I stay better forever by getting the newest Samsung Galaxy smartphone every time a new one comes out. Here’s how that works.

As a health and fitness professional, no matter what you do, you will be judged, at least initially by the way you look. This is an industry where you are EXPECTED to look the part. You don’t have to be Hollywood or showbiz-ripped, but you will have to look decent enough to have credibility. Don’t be scared though, because that’s a good thing. Imagine, you will get paid to stay healthy. Not a lot of people can say that about their jobs. Take advantage of it, and be better forever because of it.

Finally, if you want to be better forever, have a steady anchor in your life. Something that inspires you and something that keeps you grounded. For me, it’s my family and my faith in Jesus. It might be different for you, but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you have that anchor which at the end of the day, is all that matters.

Do good out there guys. Welcome to the real world.
